Summon Niger-Delta mystique with this vintage Ogoni spirit mask—its jet-black oval face contrasted by ghost-white kaolin eyes that once glowed in moonlit ritual dances.
Carved by the Ogoni people of the lower Niger River in southern Nigeria, such masks embody ancestral spirits called upon for harvest festivals, justice rites and community celebrations. Charred hardwood provides a velvety black ground; thick kaolin clay is applied in wide eye discs to heighten drama and visibility at night. Pierced pupils and rim holes aided both sight and attachment of raffia or cloth costumes.
