This impressive mask, carved in only one piece of wood, abstractly represents a bird, a large hornbill, the one that fertilises and transmits the secrets from the world of the hereafter to the soothsayer. The length of the rounded face of the animal, pierced with a protruding mouth, two tears representing the wings divided into many emblematic geometric elements of the clan. The Bobo established a series of purification rituals to bond with nature, which is fundamentally good according to them, unlike the ambivalence it represents for other ethnic groups. In order to compensate the mistakes caused by men, the masks’ main purpose is to erase evil and re-establish the balance, given by God, between sun, earth and rain
