Initiation into manhood and the means by which social control are exercised among the Loma of Liberia, who are known as the Toma in Guinea, are primarily entrusted to a male-only secret society called Poro. Leaders of this shadowy organization use special insignia and symbols only known to them to sway new members. Its protruding horns were used to hold a large mask that was worn horizontally across the forehead. When young men were being initiated into manhood, they made an appearance. In order to keep them hidden from the uninitiated, Poro Society meetings were sometimes held in the male secret precinct in the 'bush.'
