The Guro people live west of the Baule in Côte d’Ivoire. They were originally called the Kweni but when they were colonized by the French, they gave them the Baule name Guro. They are farmers and mostly grow cotton, rice, coffee and cocoa. The Guro have secret societies and believe in protective spirits to whom they used to build shrines and figures. One of these societies known as the Je society is responsible for social, political, and judicial questions, decisions of peace and ware, policing tasks, and the detection of destructive forces.
