Chiseled delicately onto its forehead, an African tribal mask features a curved brow that bends downwards to create the mask's shape. Its nose flares outward, its small mouth left slightly open. The eyes, mouth, and forehead are traced with kaolin. This mask was crafted to embody the menacing powers of the forest, and was intentionally designed to frighten with a sandstone material, a twisted grimace, distorted features, protruding facial elements, horns on the head, a bulging forehead, tubular eyes and tawny teeth. The Bete Gouro ethnic group used to utilize this particular mask in their peace-keeping rituals and customary judgments. The mask would oversee the process of restoring harmony after conflict and was an integral part of their justice sessions.
