Beautifully carved masks made by the Iggo masks people of southeastern Nigeria in the early to mid 20th century. The Agbogho, or "spirit of the virgin", was worn only by men during funeral processions or agricultural dance festivals in honor of deities and/or important members of the village. They represent the beauty and grace of Igo's ideal young woman. Masks are characterized by small, balanced facial features, often topped with elaborate hairstyles or figures, and various facial tattoos. These special masks are highly sought after and increasingly difficult to come by.
