accompanied mask by music played by particular mask and, if the conditions are perfectly favourable, by a large amount of palm wine that is consumed with great joy. The use of this dance is relatively recent for the Baoulé who learned it less than a hundred years ago from their neighbours, the Wan . In the mid-1950s, Donald Thurow estimated that the Baoulé villages of the Agba region danced the Goliabout twice a month (1957, 18). In the 1970s, the Goli was the most popular and most appreciated of all the Baoulé mask dances , and by the end of the 1980s, it had become the signature dance representing the Baoulé on Ivory Coast television or in front of tourists, and was the one that best suited a multi-ethnic national dance style. Today the Goli seems to have taken, little by little, the place of all the other masked dances of the Baoulé , both sacred and fun.
