Among Africa's largest masks are the plank masks, with the Bedu mask being a representation of a mystical buffalo-like creature. The Bedu mask plays a significant role in the New Year's festivities in Ghana's Bondoukou area and the Côte d'Ivoire's north-east. A month-long festival called Zaurau is the focal point of the Bedu Masquerade during the winter solstice, where a male and female dancer perform with masks. It is not difficult to determine a mask's gender, as the male's often feature horns, while the female's includes a large disk. The mask represents a female animal, and this is evident.
