On the religious level, the Gurunsi believe in a superior being, Yi, who withdrawed from the world after creation and whose altaris nowat the center of the village. Yi sent the spirit Su to embody him, personified in all masks and graced with an altar. Among the Gurunsi, the Lela, Winiama, Nuna, and Nunuma, are the main craftmen of these masks. They greatlyn influenced the style and the meaning of their Mossi and Bwa neighbours' masks.
