The creation of this sculpture is a joint project which involved the expertise of many Kongo specialists. Originally, a sculptor created a hollow figure which was then charged with energy by a second specialist, known as a nganga. The nganga infused specific areas of the figure with bilongo, a mixture of animal, plant and mineral components, to form the nkisi, also known as the power figure.
