Such face masks as this one of the Igbo people, or Ibo, from the south-eastern region of Nigeria, are a smaller variation of the large helmet masks they make. They do represent the same thing; a beautiful girl who comes from the afterlife to living men. These masks were worn by young men dancing with them on, in tight colourful costumes during harvest festivals and at ceremonies in honour of their ancestors, women and the earth gods. Characteristics for these smaller Igbo face masks of beautiful girls are their dominant, black decorative details of curved points and spikes, always symmetrically arranged.
