This is an authentic prop that was utilized during the filming of the 1981 BBC TV adaptation of Douglas Adams' radio series, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The Babel Fish, a peculiar and iconic element of the series, was an original prop designed by freelance prop maker Susan Moore. With its leech-like appearance and ability to translate languages when inserted into the ear, it is considered one of the strangest things in the universe. Made of latex, the Babel Fish boasts a distinct tail fin and a mouthpiece with intricate gill detailing. Moore gave extra attention to crafting this prop compared to previous ones, as it was featured in episode two where Zaphod Beeblebrox (played by Mark Wing-Davey) inserts a Babel Fish into his ear aboard the Heart of Gold.
